The golden moment was a triumph of the spirit for a shy, troubled girl who dreamed of stardom but had to battle the odds to get there.
Gibney overcame debilitating anxiety attacks, a violent alcoholic father, her brother's fight with brain tumours and her own emotional breakdown to reach TV glory.

She shocked many of her fans when she revealed early this year just how much her mental health had suffered at the hands of her late, alcoholic father. She had previously told Andrew Denton on Enough Rope about her emotional outbursts, insecurities and the lasting trauma inflicted by hearing and seeing the results of her father's regular beatings of her mother when Gibney was a child in New Zealand.

"I think even if women want to cut their face and put someone else's on, that's fine. We should stop judging each other."

"We also discussed if I fell pregnant in real life again how that would affect me at 44. We contemplated it, but I feel I might have missed the boat a bit."

Aria-award winner Rebecca Gibney is one of Australia's most loved actresses, and after going for a paddle with her, I can see why.

Rebecca joined me for a short leg of my trip up the Tamar Valley, her first time in a kayak.  Rebecca took to paddling like a duck to water, and within minutes was heading fearlessly for Whirlpool Reach.  The way Rebecca was kayaking, I had to check that she hadn't sent in a body-double.

Rebecca and her partner Richard Bell live here, and their two year old son was born in the valley.  Rebecca doesn't consider herself a greenie,  but as a Mum and resident she feels obliged to speak out.  Her concerns include human health, water use, impact on the "clean, green" brand enjoyed by the Tamar Valley, and the potential impact on businesses who depend on that brand.

"I've never felt very comfortable being in the public eye. I always felt I was a bit of a fake because I never had acting lessons and it wasn't something I'd wanted to do. Whenever I was out in public and people recognised me, I felt the image wasn't good enough. I didn't feel dressed up enough. I never felt pretty enough.

"It was a turning point for me. I had to deal with those fears or I probably would have run away somewhere and died. I was in a bad way."
A female psychologist encouraged Gibney to confront her self-loathing and phobias during two years of intensive therapy: "She didn't pull any punches. I had to recognise why I was acting the way I was.. what the negative patterns were from, and then let them go."

Prominent actress Rebecca Gibney, who lives in the Tamar Valley, has an interview in this weeks' 'Woman's Day' on how she and her family have been opposing the mill and how this has lead to her being abused and her car being vandalised.

A year ago, actor Rebecca Gibney was reviewing her performance in an episode of the local crime drama Stingers, and was horrified to discover that her Botox injections had been altogether too successful. Her frown lines had been erased - along with much of her capacity to show emotion.
